JAKARTA — Indonesia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah (Kemenhaj) is recruiting officers for the 2027 hajj season, according to a report by Republika published on 20 October 2026. The ministry is working with the National Civil Service Agency (BKN) on the selection process.

Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochamad Irfan Yusuf said at a press conference at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Jakarta on Friday, 9 October 2026, that the selection would be "very measured and orderly," according to Republika. He said BKN's involvement was expected to reduce confusion in recruitment.

Selected officers will then spend one month living at a hajj dormitory before they start duty, Irfan Yusuf said, according to Republika. He said the same preparation model was used last year and was welcomed by pilgrims.

Deputy Minister Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak said 75,000 people had registered for the 2027 selection, according to Republika. Applicants will sit a computer-based test (CAT), and results will be announced after the test, he said.

Republika did not report how many officers will be recruited or when the results will be published.

The Indonesian Ombudsman (ORI) had earlier asked the ministry to improve transparency in the selection of officers, according to Republika. ORI member Nuzran Joher said on 25 September 2026 that the selection stages "still need to be strengthened" in terms of transparency and accountability. He also said the 2026 hajj had generally gone well. ORI handed its supervision report on the 2026 hajj to the deputy minister on 23 September 2026.

Background

Indonesia sends one of the largest hajj delegations in the world. The ministry oversees the organisation of the pilgrimage, including the deployment of officers who serve pilgrims during the trip.

Republika reported that ORI received public complaints through an online complaints post during the 2026 hajj, including alleged long delays by the ministry in handling complaints about officer appointments.
